Your Genes, Your Wellness: Why I No Longer Do “One-Size-Fits-All” Wellness

Can I talk about something that fired me up alittle, in the best kind of way.
I’ve spent over two decades immersed in women’s wellness. I’ve trained in eating psychology , Solution focused counselling, energy psychology , functional science, and indgenous healing systems like TCM, You name it, I’ve studied it (and probably studied it again). But the real shift happened when I started working with functional genomics.
That’s when the guesswork started to fade and everything got personal.

What is functional genomics, really?
In simple terms: it’s the science of how your genes behave in real time. Not just what genes you carry, but how they’re responding to your environment.
Food, sleep, stress, toxins, trauma, movement, hormones, your entire lifestyle is in a constant two-way conversation with your genes. And your genes are talking back.
With RNA expression, we go even deeper. We ask:Which genes are switched on? Which ones are quiet? And how does that affect the way your body is showing up right now — metabolically, hormonally, emotionally?
For me, functional genomics isn’t about overcomplicating health. It’s about personalising it.It’s about understanding that no two women are the same and finally having the tools to respect that.
A Real Example: Not Just “Tired and Hormonal”
Let me share an example that reflects what I often see in practice.
A woman in her late 40s is feeling worn down emotionally and physically. She’s foggy, exhausted, and battling with persistent shoulder pain that doesn’t respond to the usual self-care. She books an appointment with her GP, hoping to get some answers.
Because of her age and symptoms, she’s told she’s likely in peri-menopause and HRT is offered straight away.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with that. HRT can be helpful for many women. But in this case, she didn’t feel ready to start treatment without understanding what was really going on.
She wanted a deeper conversation. She wanted to know more.
So she explored functional genomic testing, including RNA expression panels, to help her understand what her body was trying to say beneath the surface.
Here’s what came up:
High expression of IL6 and TNF-α genes, indicating inflammation was actively at play. Her IL10 gene, the calming anti-inflammatory one, showed low expression COMT and CYP1B1 key genes for metabolising and clearing oestrogen weren’t functioning efficiently
That meant excess oestrogen wasn’t being detoxified properly, which can lead to internal inflammation, fatigue, and symptoms like musculoskeletal pain.
This insight didn’t replace medical care but it gave her language, clarity, and confidence to return to her GP and have a more informed, collaborative conversation.
And with this deeper genetic insight, her wellness practitioner was also able to recommend specific lifestyle shifts, nutritional changes, and daily wellness practices that supported her unique biochemistry ,not someone else’s protocol.
She felt empowered, not confused. Seen, not dismissed. And most importantly, she had a plan that respected her individuality.
Why I Choose Testing Over Guessing
Training in Functional Genomics & Nutrition Coaching has changed everything about how I support women. It’s helped me move beyond surface-level symptom tracking and into a space of real clarity and personalisation.
Let me be clear: I don’t diagnose. That’s not my role.
But what I do offer is intelligent, compassionate insight, grounded in evidence, lived experience, and collaboration with trusted clinicians and labs.
Together, we gather the missing pieces. We listen to the whole story not just the symptoms. And we stop guessing.
Because Here’s the Real Issue…
Women are constantly placed into one-size-fits-all boxes especially during perimenopause. But I’ll say this clearly:
You are not one-size-fits-all.You are one-of-a-damn-kind.
Your genes tell a story.Your symptoms tell a story. And your body deserves someone who’s willing to actually listen.
What Can You Do?
If any of this sounds familiar, let it be a reminder:
If you’re not getting the full picture, you can ask for more If something feels off, you’re allowed to trust that If you’re ready for better support, find someone who sees all of you not just your weight or your blood pressure.
Functional genomics is not about complicated science. It’s about clarity. It’s about saying:“Here’s what my body is showing me — and here’s how I can support her.”
