Genes and Wellness: Behavioural Light Switches

A picture of DNA , genes

So, the other day I was deep into some research on personalised medicine (because you know I geek out on this stuff 🤓). I was looking at how our genes influence behaviour, and I came across something that literally made me pause and go: “Wait… WHAT?!”

In July 2024, researchers at Nagoya University in Japan managed to take a fruit fly and, by tweaking a single gene, change its entire dating behaviour. Normally, one species of fly sings to attract a mate, while another offers a food gift. With just one genetic switch, the “singing” flies ditched their tunes and started gift-giving instead.

Yep. Science basically rewrote their love language.

Now, you might be thinking: Cool, but what does this have to do with me? Let me break it down.

Genes Are Like Behavioural Light Switches

What this little fruit fly drama shows us is that some behaviours are hardwired into our genes. Flick the switch, and boom  new behaviour.

Now, we humans are way more layered than flies (thank goodness), but the truth is the same: our genes play a role in how we feel, how we handle stress, our cravings, our sleep, our energy levels all of it.

Epigenetics: You’re the One Flipping the Switch

Here’s the good news: you don’t need a lab coat to influence your genes. That’s what epigenetics is all about—the science of how lifestyle and environment flip your genetic switches on or off.

  • Meditation can dial down stress signals.

  • Moving your body can light up the genes for energy and focus.

  • Nourishing foods can calm inflammation pathways.

In other words, your daily choices are literally conversations with your DNA.

Neuroplasticity: Your Brain, Your Rules

In flies, the genetic tweak rewired their brains. In humans, we do this through neuroplasticitythe brain’s natural ability to adapt and form new connections.

Every time you practise gratitude, swap a thought pattern, or choose a healthier response, you’re reshaping your brain. It’s like self-directed “behavioural engineering”… without the sci-fi lab experiments.

Culture, Evolution & Why Wellness Must Be Personal

Here’s the part I really love: both fly species had the same gene, but their environments shaped it into completely different behaviours.

That’s us, too. Humans share 99% of our DNA, yet our culture, environment, and lived experience shape how wellness actually shows up in our lives.

This is why one-size-fits-all health advice so often fails it’s not about “fixing” you, it’s about understanding your unique blueprint.

Why This Lights Me Up

This is exactly the reason I created the Precision Wellness Method to help women not just know the science, but actually apply it in ways that feel personal, culturally aware, and sustainable.

Because wellness isn’t about forcing yourself into a mould. It’s about learning how to switch on the parts of your blueprint that help you thrive.

The Takeaway

Genes give you the blueprint.Lifestyle, mindset, and daily rituals decide how that blueprint is expressed.

So next time you meditate, prep a nourishing meal, or pause to breathe remember: you’re not just doing something nice for yourself. You’re literally teaching your genes how to behave.

And honestly? That’s the most empowering lesson a fruit fly could ever give us. 🦋
